Ashok Kumar BIOGRAPHY
Born as Kumudlal Kunjilal Ganguly, Ashok Kumar - the legendary Bollywood personality, was more of an icon than an actor. Educated in Calcutta, he started his career in Bollywood with Jeevan Naiya (1936) quite accidentally. It so happened that the lead actor fell sick and he (then the lab assistant) was called in for as a replacement. This serendipitous moment led to the beginning of a 60 year long acting career. His performance in Achhut Kanya took him into the Big league. Some of his famous movies in those days were Savitri, Nirmala, Jhoola for which he also sang songs. One of these famous songs was Main Ban ka Panchhi.
Ashok Kumar redefined acting in Indian cinema with the film Kismat and the movie went on to become the highest grosser Indian film of that time. He appeared almost 20 times with the beautiful Queen of Tragedy Meena Kumari in films like Parineeta, Pakeezah, Bandish, Aarti and many more. In the 1980s and 1990s, because of age restraint, he acted in fewer movies as compared to the earlier days. He also anchored the Indian soap opera Hum Log. His last appearance was in the movie Aankhon Mein Tum Ho released in 1997.
He was Anoop Kumar and Kishor Kumar's brother, both of whom were famous actors of Hindi cinema. He passed away in Mumbai at the age of 90. During his career, he starred in more than 275 movies. He won many contemporary and popular awards during his lifetime.
